What is Palliative Care?

There are important differences and an important similarity between hospice and palliative care.

A senior yellow lab dog peeks out from under a fringed yellow blanket. He looks happy.

Palliative care focuses on comfort, quality of life, and relief from the symptoms of serious or chronic illness. It can be helpful at any stage of a pet’s illness and may be provided alongside treatments intended to manage, slow, or treat the underlying disease.

For example, palliative care may include pain management, nausea control, appetite support, mobility assistance, environmental changes, nursing care, and guidance for families as their pet’s needs change. The goal is to help your pet feel as comfortable and engaged in daily life as possible.

How Is Palliative Care Different From Hospice?

Hospice care is a form of palliative care for pets who are approaching the end of life.** It is most appropriate when an illness is no longer curable, when further disease-directed treatment is unlikely to provide meaningful benefit, or when a family has chosen to focus primarily on comfort rather than pursuing more intensive treatment.

While both palliative care and hospice prioritize comfort and quality of life, their timing and focus are slightly different:

Palliative care can begin earlier in the course of an illness and may be provided while your pet is still receiving treatment for the underlying condition.

Hospice care is specifically focused on the final stage of life, helping families manage symptoms, anticipate changes, evaluate quality of life, prepare for possible crises, and make thoughtful end-of-life decisions.

At Pallium, neither approach is one-size-fits-all. Care is tailored to your pet’s medical needs, personality, daily routines, and what matters most to your family. Our goal is to preserve comfort and connection while giving you the information and support you need to navigate each stage with confidence.
